Student Starts Volunteer Tutoring Program
Life as a volunteer at Cristo Rey New York High School so far has been nothing less than an adventure. I teach one section of sophomore Spanish. On top of teaching, I’m also the school’s Admissions Counselor. When I’m not in class or preparing for class, I’m usually running around to different elementary/middle schools (both public and private). Some days are more difficult than others, but my students make all of the headaches worthwhile. It’s amazing to listen to their ideas and their dreams for the future. My students inspire me on a daily basis, and their energy keeps driving me forward.
One particularly bad day was a couple weeks ago after school. There was a shooting in front of our school. Luckily, none of our students or staff were hurt. The police have looked into it and found that a groups called BDS, Broad Daylight Shooters, was involved. The incident was in retaliation to a shooting the week before. Our faculty and staff took very good care of our students that day. I saw the love and the concern for these young adults we care so much about.
There are days when I feel I can’t imagine being here for two years, but there are many other days when I feel that I won’t be able to leave after my 2-year program is over. I’m still working on transitioning from college. I can say with confidence that I’m glad I made the choice to volunteer at CRNY.
